More Than a Match: AFC Ann Arbor and Food Gatherers

Food Gatherers is Washtenaw County’s leading food rescue and hunger-relief organization. Founded in 1988 as Michigan’s first food rescue program, Food Gatherers has grown into a lifeline for families in need across the region. Their mission is simple yet urgent, “to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.” Acting as both a food bank and a food rescue operation, the organization distributes millions of pounds of food each year to pantries, shelters, schools, and community centers. In 2024, Food Gatherers distributed 10.3 million pounds of food — the equivalent of 8.5 million meals. Their network supports not just hunger relief, but dignity, stability, and the belief that no neighbor should be left behind.
