Yuri Farkas had two assists and a goal Saturday to earn him Audi Ann Arbor Man of the Match

AFC Ann Arbor hosted FC Indiana for the first time in club history Saturday evening. The 5-0 victory saw five different goal scorers, which was enough to tie to club records.

After both teams settled in, Ann Arbor wasted no time finding opportunities to strike first. In the 8’, 9’ and 10’ quality chances came for The Mighty Oak who were unable to convert in the early minutes of the match. In the 12’ Jesse Muskwe was able to convert AFC's 4th opportunity in just a few minutes.

Ann Arbor continued to pressure Indiana after the first goal as left back Tendai Jiraira and forward Alec Lasinski linked up for some great combinations which lead to even more opportunities on net.

From there, Farkas began penetrating deeper into the attacking third, laying off multiple balls to teammates that were goal scoring chances. In the 26’ he found Kyle Breitmeyer streaking up the right side, played a perfect ball which Breitmeyer calmly collected with his chest and played the next touch with his feet to the back of the net making it 2-0 AFC Ann Arbor which held until half.

Ann Arbor showed no complacency and began the second half bringing even more pressure than in the first. Goals from Alec Lasinski (49’) and Farkas (51’) opened up a 4-0 nothing lead just minutes into the second half.

The final goal came from Amadou Cisse (65’) making it 5-0 Ann Arbor with goals coming from 5 different players. The victory matches a club record set earlier this month against Michigan Stars FC for largest margin of victory and most goals in a game. This match however was played at Hollway (the Stars was an away match) which marks two new home records for AFC.

Defensively, the back line was solid and consistent throughout the match. TJ Tomasso was unphased by the few quality shot attempts by FC Indiana and had a lot of help from his supporting cast of David Cross, Jimmy Fiscus, Jake Rufe and Jiraira.

AFC Ann Arbor returns to action Saturday July 1st as they look to avenge their only loss of the season when they host Lansing United at 7PM. The Mighty Oak are unbeaten at home in 2017 and have only two remaining matches at Hollway Field (July 1, July 17).

Michigan Cyber Range Match Day Preview: AFC Ann Arbor vs FC Indiana - Saturday, June 24th at 7PM

In the midst of a three game home stand, FC Indiana will travel to Ann Arbor for the first time, just two weeks removed from the two clubs first meeting in Lafayette, IN. Gates open at 6PM for the 7PM kickoff at Pioneer High School's Hollway Field, Saturday, June 24th.

The Mighty Oak were able take 3 points on the road in the June 9th contest, led by a strong all-around team performance in the first half which featured Ann Arbor up 4-0 at the break. FC Indiana fought back earning two second half goals but fell short of completing the comeback as the deficit was too large to overcome.

Ann Arbor will look to add to its narrow cushion at the top of the table with just five matches remaining on the season. The traveling Great Lakes Conference side, FC Indiana, will be looking for revenge Saturday evening. Aware of the challenge, Coach Rudland and his team will be ready for the contest.

“We’re looking forward to being at home again tomorrow. We know that despite Indiana’s place in the table they have a lot of quality in their team and gave us a good game when we traveled to their home field two weeks ago. Our men have to approach every game from here on out with respect for the opponent and desire to get three points,” said Rudland.

Tickets for tomorrow’s 7PM kick will be available to purchase online until 2PM on Saturday and then at the gate beginning at 6PM.

About AFC Ann Arbor

Associate Football Club (AFC) Ann Arbor sprung roots in the summer of 2015 competing in the Great Lakes Premier League. In 2016, The Mighty Oak as they’re also known, bumped up to the National Premier Soccer League to compete at an even higher level joining the likes of Lansing United and Detroit City FC. In their inaugural season in the NPSL, Ann Arbor was one of sixteen teams (out of 96) to qualify for the playoffs. After a successful inaugural campaign in the NPSL, The Mighty Oak have been in 1st place all season long in the Great Lakes Conference.

Ann Arbor Remains Unbeaten At Home With Late Equalizer

AFC Ann Arbor went down early on, but regrouped in the second half and secured a late point at home after Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match James Vaughan converted his spot kick deep into stoppage time.

It was a physical match from the start. Both sides were looking to assert their dominance, but after just 7 minutes Milwaukee converted from a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.

The goal shifted the match tactically. Milwaukee looked content to get men behind the ball and keep possession for much of the match. This left opportunities to counter attack and The Mighty Oak worked hard to try and take advantage.

Despite the effort, and several gilt-edged chances, the sides went in to half time with Milwaukee leading 1-0.

Ann Arbor began the second half aggressively, pressuring the ball and looking to find ways in behind the Milwaukee defense.

The physicality only increased as the game wore on, and both sides saw several players issued yellow cards for the efforts.

In the 74th minute, the match looked to be turning Ann Arbor’s way, as Alec Lasinski earned a penalty kick. Yuri Farkas stepped up, and hit the ball with a lot of pace, but was unlucky to see his effort ricochet off the post and stay out.

Despite the miss, The Mighty Oak kept the pressure on until the final minute and deep into stoppage time Kaleb Jackson was taken out in the box. The referee pointed to the spot and with Yuri subbed off, James Vaughan took control. Vaughan made it look easy and sent the keeper the wrong way, leveling the match at 1-1.

The action wasn’t done yet, however, as Ann Arbor created three good chances, the last of which from a corner. Jimmy Fiscus climbed well and his header flashed over the bar. The referee blew the whistle and the sides shared the points.

Coach Rudland took several positives from the match, most notably saluting the sides’ mental toughness throughout.

“You give away an early goal, you don’t find a way to equalize before half time - it’s frustrating.” He said.

“It would have been easy for our guys to mail it in [after Yuri’s penalty hit the post. So, I thought our perseverance, our resilience, and our ability to continue to fight was excellent. I give the guys a lot of credit for that because late in the game it would have been easy to just kind of sit in and say ‘Hey, it’s not our day.’ But we didn’t do that. “

NPSL play continues at home Saturday, June 24th as The Mighty Oak take on FC Indiana at 7:00 pm.

Michigan Cyber Range Match Day Guide: AFC Ann Arbor vs Milwaukee Torrent

Association Football Club Ann Arbor will host Milwaukee Torrent at Pioneer High School’s Hollway Field for the first time in club history Friday night.

Milwaukee, a new addition to the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) Great Lakes Conference in 2017, hosted The Mighty Oak in the club’s first NPSL match of the season. Ann Arbor stole three points on the road with a 3-1 victory back on May 6th in Milwaukee.

But a lot has changed since the early season meeting between the two sides and Coach Rudland and team are well aware of that.

“Milwaukee was our first of the season, which seems like ages ago. They have changed things tactically and shifted some personnel based on our reports, so we’re preparing for them with the updated information we have,” said Rudland.

Sitting atop the table of the Great Lakes Conference with a 7-0-1 (W-D-L) record earnings 21 points in just 8 matches doesn’t change the approach for AFC Ann Arbor.

“For us, it’s all about the next game. The work we’ve done so far is positive, but we have to keep chipping away and prepare for each match, each opponent with focus and detail. At the of the day, we still have to be hungry to prove ourselves,” added Rudland.

Gates at Hollway open at 6PM for the 7 o’clock start with tons of activities and promotions happening all night. See below for more details.

Tickets will be available online until 2PM and available at the gate starting at 5:30PM. Youth tickets for ages 4-12 are $6, and adult tickets are $10. Infants and kids ages 1, 2 and 3 get in free.

Association Football Club Ann Arbor secured their eighth win of the season over FC Indiana, 4-2. Another three points brings the total for The Mighty Oak to 21 on the season in just 8 matches (possible 24 points).

The beginning of the contest found both sides looking to find their footing and exchanging possession. After a FC Indiana header met the post just 15 minutes in off a free kick, Ann Arbor’s focus sharpened and the attack began.

In the 27th minute, Kaleb Jackson opened up the scoring from a sneaky Yuri Farkas through ball. AFC continued to pressure Indiana which lead to a total of 4 goals in 16 minutes (27, 35, 41, 43). Audi Ann Arbor Man of the Match, Jesse Muskwe had a brace in addition to a converted PK from Kyle Breitmeyer.

The defensive effort led by veteran goalkeeper TJ Tomasso along with center backs Matthieu Braem and David Scott helped keep FC Indiana to just 3 shots in the first half. Colin Watson played his first full 90 for The Mighty Oak and played with composure and confidence as he stepped in for the injured Sam Zisette.

The second half began the way the first ended with Ann Arbor creating a plethora of chances which FC Indiana was able to expose in a counter attack in the 61st minute.

The Lions added a goal off a penalty kick in the 81st minute but the final whistle came too quick, sending AFC back to Tree Town with another 3 points.

AFC Ann Arbor has 6 NPSL regular season matches remaining, 4 of which are at Pioneer High School’s Hollway Field. The Mighty Oak will host Milwaukee Torrent, this coming Friday, June 16th at 7PM. Get your tickets for June 16th match here.

AFC Ann Arbor Shine in Berkley, Beat Stars 5-0

Association Football Club Ann Arbor travelled to Berkley, MI Friday where they took on Michigan Stars FC.  In an evening to remember, The Mighty Oak put 5 goals past Stars and kept a clean sheet to earn a comfortable 5-0 victory.

The scoring started early, first through Kaleb Jackson. In his first start for the club, Jackson snuck in behind the backline and found himself one-on-one with the Stars keeper. He kept a cool head and tucked the finish away to put Ann Arbor up 1-0.

Just 17 minutes later it was Kyle Breitmeyer getting in on the action. After some great play down the right, KB9 saw his opportunity and took it, hammering the ball into the top corner to double The Mighty Oak advantage.

With the score at 2-0, Stars went into halftime with their work cut out for them.

In the 2nd half, The Mighty Oak continued to pile on the pressure. Barely 8 minutes had passed before Audi Ann Arbor Man of the Match, Jimmy Fiscus, got involved in the scoring. He found himself unmarked at the top of the six-yard box, and with little left to do he headed the ball in the back of the net to make it 3-0.

The game looked to be over at that point, but Ann Arbor were taking no chances. In the 64th minute, Alec Lasinski came off the bench and jumped straight into the action. His first touch was part of a one-two that left him wide open inside the box and with his second touch he slammed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 4-0.

Just 8 minutes later, James Vaughan put the icing on the cake. His sublime freekick curled over the wall and past the outstretched hands of the Stars keeper to give AFC their 5th goal of the evening. With just under 20 minutes to go, AFC brought in several substitutions and closed out another important NPSL victory.

Following the match, AFC head coach Eric Rudland shared his thoughts on the importance of the win.

“At this stage in the game, every point we get is huge.” He said. “To get 3 points tonight is great. It keeps us moving in the direction that we want to move in.”

Ann Arbor’s NPSL campaign continues Friday, June 9th as The Mighty Oak head to Lafayette, Indiana to take on FC Indiana.

Michigan Cyber Range Match Day Guide: AFC Ann Arbor at Michigan Stars FC

The Mighty Oak will travel to Berkley, Michigan Friday evening to take on Michigan Stars FC. The Stars enter Friday 1-2-1 with draws coming against Grand Rapids FC and Detroit City FC while Ann Arbor remains at the top of the Great Lakes Conference table.

The club’s have met twice previously, both in 2016, with one draw and the Stars winning the other. Ann Arbor will look for their first win against the Michigan Stars FC.

The history goes beyond those two matches with current Ann Arbor players TJ Tomasso, Kyle Breitmeyer and Ben Thorton all having made appearances for the Stars previously. All three players will be dressing for The Mighty Oak tonight hoping to earn a result against their former club.

Stars striker Eric McWoods enter Friday’s match with an impressive three goals in four games, but will face an Ann Arbor defense that has posted clean sheets for three of their six matches so far. Look for a lot of action between McWoods and Ann Arbor’s Jimmy Fiscus in tonight’s NPSL match-up that also holds Michigan Milk Cup implications.

Monday’s win against Grand Rapids FC was the first comeback of the season for Ann Arbor as well as the first time this season Hector Morales and Jesse Muskwe found the score sheet. With strong support coming from forwards Yuri Farkas and Breitmeyer, The Mighty Oak continue to have a strong attack. Ann Arbor fans should be comfortable in their clubs travels as it’s defensive effort continues to set the tone for AFC Ann Arbor with strong play coming from Sam Zisette, David Cross, Fiscus, Thorton, Colin Watson and Tendai Jiraira.

Kick-off is set for 7PM and the match can be streamed here.

AFC Ann Arbor secured an important come-from behind victory over Grand Rapids FC on Memorial Day.

The match started brightly for The Mighty Oak. Chances in the 2nd, 8th and 9th minute were all close, but none found their way in the back of the net.

Grand Rapids seemed to find their footing and began to put some offensive pressure on Ann Arbor. With such an open game, both sides saw several opportunities go begging. However, in the 30th minute, it was Grand Rapids who struck first.

The Grand Rapids striker stuck a foot out and poked the ball around TJ to put Grand Rapids up 1-0.

Despite a long-distance Jake Rosen effort hitting the cross bar and Yuri Farkas burying the rebound, the referee ruled Farkas was in an offside position, and the goal was called back.

The first half came to a close with Grand Rapids taking a 1-0 advantage into the break. However, that was all to change in the second half.

In the 57th minute, Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match, Jesse Muskwe, slid a cross to Hector Morales and the Cuban buried the chance to level to score.

Just 8 minutes later, Jesse turned from provider to finisher - rifling his effort off the post and into the back of the net to put The Mighty Oak up 2-1.

The men fought hard and controlled the ball to see out an important 2-1 win.

Coach Rudland was happy with the result, and pointed to some of the changes in the side being key to the victory.

“A couple guys hadn’t been in the team over the course of the past four matches, and for Hector to come on and score a goal, Jake Rosen played well at outside back, David at center back. That’s great for us to see.”  He said.

“You lose a few guys out of the team but that’s what this is about - other guys stepping up to the plate. “

The result sees The Mighty Oak move to 15 points from 6 NPSL matches.

In the next match, Ann Arbor hit the road to Berkley, MI where they take on Michigan Stars, Friday June 2nd.

Michigan Cyber Range Match Day Guide: AFC Ann Arbor vs Grand Rapids FC - May 29, 2017

Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids share a special history having both started in the Great Lakes Premier League just 3 years ago. The two made the jump from the GLPL (now the Premier League of America) to the National Premier Soccer League, after the inaugural 2015 campaign. They joined a very talented and experienced Great Lakes West (now Great Lakes Conference) having to square up against clubs like Lansing United (won the Midwest Region in 2014) and Detroit City FC. But that didn't slow down either of these clubs and Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor finished first and second, respectively, in the Great Lakes.

Monday's match will be the 5th contest between the two sides with Grand Rapids having the upper edge all time, 2-1-1. Ann Arbor's first victory over GRFC came last May with a decisive 3-1 result.

Grand Rapids has earned 7 points in just 3 games with Ann Arbor winning 4 of the first 5 matches for 12 points. Tomorrow's contest will be a good opportunity for AFC to bounce back following their first setback of the season against Lansing United on Friday.

Ann Arbor will have to look elsewhere for scoring after National Player of the Week, Dario Suarez, earned a red card after Friday's match.

Fans are encouraged to wear white for the first ever "White Out" at Hollway Field to commemorate the all new white kits going on sale. Tickets are on sale online until midnight tonight at a discounted rate or can be bought at the gate tomorrow after prices increase.

The Mighty Oak Stumble in Lansing, Lose 2-0

FullSizeRender (15).jpg

AFC Ann Arbor lost 2-0 to Lansing United on Friday night in Lansing. It was a always going to be a difficult away match for Ann Arbor and The Mighty Oak were unable to make the most of their opportunities throughout.

The first half started with Lansing getting on the score sheet early in just the 3rd minute. TJ Tomasso was well positioned in goal, but his outstretched hands couldn’t quite make contact with the low curling drive and Lansing took the lead.

The goal seemed to settle the side, with possession coming in long stretches for Ann Arbor. However in the 28th minute, it was again Lansing playing on the front foot, winning a penalty kick after some aggressive counter-attacking play.

TJ guessed right on the penalty, diving low and making a strong save to palm the ball out for a Lansing corner. The ensuing corner was cleared and AFC Ann Arbor avoided going down two goals so early in the match. The 1-0 scoreline held heading into halftime.

The second half saw a shift of play – Ann Arbor were pressing hard to find a way back into the match and Lansing were content to sit in and look to hit on the counter attack.

With substitutes Yuri Farkas, David Cross and Kaleb Jackson on in the second half as well, it was clear that Coach Rudland was throwing all hands on deck going forward.

As the side pushed for an equalizer, Lansing looked to exploit the gaps in the Ann Arbor backline. In the 88th minute, they did just that.  After a throw in deep in Lansing territory, Lansing capitalized on the opportunity to counter. The deflected shot snuck past a wrong-footed TJ and put the match out of reach for The Mighty Oak.

After time had expired, Dario Suarez was issued a red card by the referee for alleged “violent conduct and dissent”. The club has been in contact with members of the NPSL's Disciplinary Committee to express disapproval in the booking.

Coach Rudland spoke to the result and what it means moving forward following the loss.

“The message to the guys is ‘It’s early in the season. This is one game’.’” He said.

“We have to take this lump and learn from it and move on. […] It’s a regeneration day tomorrow, we’ll train Sunday, just tactically to make sure we’re switched on, and then we have to lace up and play again on Monday.”

The Mighty Oak look to bounce back from Friday’s loss in just a few days as they host Grand Rapids FC at Hollway Field at 1:00 pm on Memorial Day.

AFC Ann Arbor will face Lansing United Friday evening as the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the Great Lakes Conference. The match will kick off at 7PM at the East Lansing Soccer Complex. Tickets can be purchased online here or for those unable to make the travel you can stream the match here

Last year, The Mighty Oak captured 6 points in 2 matches against LanU, both in dramatic fashion. When Ann Arbor traveled to Lansing, the final result was 1-0 in favor of AFC on a beautiful olimpico goal compliments of Bruno Oliveira. Then, when the teams met for the second time in 2016 in Ann Arbor, The Mighty Oak found themselves down 2 goals with just 11 minutes left in the match. Lead by the heroics of Hector Morales, the boys rallied back to score 3 goals in before the final whistle to pull off the unbelievable comeback.

Before coming to Ann Arbor, Head Coach & Sporting Director Eric Rudland spent two years with Lansing United, helping them earn the Great Lakes Championship in 2014. Add in the fact Lansing is off to a good start this season and you won't need any more reason for this to be a thrilling early season match up.

"We've had a good week of training coming off last weekend's matches, so tactically and physically our men should be in good order. Obviously, Lansing United os off to a great start in league play, hopefully we can settle into the match and find a way to neutralize their team strengths," said Rudland.

Friday's match also has Michigan Milk Cup implications, a cup created to crown Michigan's top semi-pro side. For standings and updates visit the Michigan Milk Cup website
